Evidence of a human presence in the area dates back to Neolithic times and was occupied by the Romans - attracted to the thermal springs. However, it was the Arabs who actually founded the town. During the Reconquest of 1482 new constructions replaced the old mosques and Arab palaces.
The more modern part of the town is centred around the Plaza Duque de Mandas while just a short stroll away are the Plaza de la Constitucion and the Paseo Montes Jovellar, the latter containing two of the towns main monuments - the Castillo and the Iglesia Conventual de Nuestra Senora del Carmen (the viewpoint from behind this structure offers superb views across Los Tajos Canyon). From here the towns old historical centre can be accessed and is made up of narrow, labyrinthine streets taking you past the impressive Iglesia Parroquial Mayor de Santa Maria de la Encarnacion. Its in this part of town that many other smaller points of interest are to be found including the Queens Hospital, Inquisition house, the Devils Stairway and the old Arab dungeons known as Mazmorros.
Alhama de Granada has plenty to offer in the way of modern amenities without compromising the charm and beauty you'd expect to find in a town of historic interest while its geographical location offers nature lovers an ideal base from which to explore some breath-takingly beautiful countryside.
