This very small town is located in the west of the Province, 45km from Granada City and about a 20 minute drive east of Alhama de Granada.
The area has been occupied by Romans, Muslims and then the Christians after the reconquest. An earthquake in 1884 destroyed most of the original town centre and the current town centre dates back to the end of the 19th Century.
With the local economy based on agriculture (particularly the cultivation of olives and almonds) and a slightly out of the way location, Arenas del Rey has a very rural feel to it. A typical small inland Spanish village where everyone seems to know everyone and the pace of life is slow. In its favour the towns location very close to the Natural Park of Las Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara & Alhama make it an ideal base from which to explore beautiful unspoilt countryside while at the nearby Lake Bermejales there are ample oppurtunities for enjoying many more outdoor actitivities.
Arenas del Rey is one of the many towns & cities in the beautiful region of Granada Spain. Discover Granada Costa Tropical with the history, local information, property sales and holiday listings at Viva-Granada.com
