Located 121km north-east of Granada City in a valley just to the north of the larger town of Baza.

Under the Arabs Benamaurel was an important and prosperous farming community until the 16th Century expulsion of the Moriscos when the area became virtually unpopulated.

This is a very typical small inland Spanish town where the pace of life is slow and the locals unsophisticated. The main economic activities are agriculture based, particularly the cultivation of cereals. For those who enjoy outdoor activities the Sierra de Baza Natural Park and Lake Negratin are both just a short drive away.

The last weekend of every April is spent celebrating the Moors and Christians.
