Capiliera sits high in the Alpujarra hills within the boundaries of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park with spectacular views across the ravine of the Barranco del Poqueira and the neighbouring towns of Bubion and Pampaneira.
The town itself has all the architectural characterisics typical of the area being made up of small white-washed houses built along narrow winding streets.
As with its neighbouring towns the economy relies mostly on tourism and there are numerous outdoor activities to be enjoyed such as hiking, bird watching and horse trekking while its popularity as a rural tourist destination mean there are various bars and restaurants providing entertainment during the evenings.
The name Capileira is believed to be taken from the Latin word 'capitellaria' meaning 'peaks.'
