The Almunecar skyline is dominated by the impressive remains of the old arab castle. It was built in the 1st century b.c. by the Romans. During occupation by the Moors it was made into a substantial fortress. During the Nasrid Dynasty in Granada, the castle was used by the royalty as their beachside retreat
A tour of the castle is worthwhile. There is a small museum in the castle with archeological artefacts. The dungeons still remain and children will enjoy indulging their ghoulish nature by peeking in these holes that the prisioners were dropped in especially since some still remain. For the best views go to the 16th century gun platform above the beach.
