Located 60km from Granada City in the north-east of the province Fonelas sits in a green valley of poplar trees which, in turn, is surrounded by the dramatic 'lunar-like' rock formations typical of this area.
The area has been inhabited as far back as the late Palaeolithic times with many remains from this period having been found locally. Evidence has also been found proving that Romans also settled here.
The most important economic activities are agriculture, particularly the cultivation of olive trees, tobacco, peaches and poplar wood (for paper producion) aswell as cattle raising.
This is a very small town where the pace of life is slow to say the least. While the majority of the buildings are typical white-washed houses there are a large number of neighbourhoods made up of cave houses - a tradition that goes back centuries in ths particular part of the province. Services are basic but the towns proximity to Guadix means that a wider selection of shops and ameneties are just a short drive away.
Fonelas is one of the many towns & cities in the beautiful region of Granada Spain. Discover Granada Costa Tropical with the history, local information, property sales and holiday listings at Viva-Granada.com
