Located just off the A-92 in the east of the province on the northern slpoes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Granada City is just 85km to the west.
The towns origins date back to the Muslim period and during that time belonged to the Arab Palace of Sened. After the Reconquest it was part of the Marquisate of Zenete.
Hueneja is typical of many small inland Spanish towns being made up of white-washed houses built along narrow cobbled streets. The pace of life is slow with a definate rural appeal. The local economy is agriculture based although the towns geographical situation within the boundaries of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park mean that rural tourism in the area is on the increase.
