Located on the slopes of the Sierra Parapanda, Illora lies just to the north-west of Granada City on the main road to Montefrio.
Originally known as Illurco the area was first sttled by Sueves and Visigoths until the Moorish invasions during the 8th Century. The town was finally surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs in 1483.
This typically Spanish inland town is dotted with historic monuments including the Alcazaba de Illora and surrounded by beautiful countryside. It is one of the small towns in the Poniente Grenadino region that are becoming more and more popular with tourists looking for alternatives to the coastal areas.
