Located just off the E-902, Lanjaron is within an hours drive south of Granada City. Its district falls within the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and is considered to be the western gateway to the Alpujarra region.
Famous for its mineral water Lanjaron has one of the best valued spas in Spain and its waters have been used for their alleged medicinal purposes since the 18th Century. Demand for Lanjaron bottled water has led to the recent opening of the towns third bottling plant.
The local architecture is very typical of the style found throughout the Alpujarra region particularly the Barrio Hondillo (Lanjarons old town) where the visitor will find steep, winding streets lined with small white washed houses. The centre of town takes on a slightly more modern feel and has all the services one would expect to find in a larger town but without compromising the original charm.
A testament to the towns importance during the Al-Andalus period are the remains of the Castillo Almoravide (Arab Castle) which dominates the view from the town.
Lanjarons geographical location make it the ideal place from which to enjoy many types of tourism. A short drive north will take you to Granada City with all its splendours while to the south are the seaside towns of Almunecar, Salobrena and La Herradura with their many beaches. For those wishing to enjoy outdoor pursuits there are numerous activites to be enjoyed within the Alpujarras including cycling, hiking and horse-trekking.
Lanjaron market is held on the first Sunday of every month.
