Located in the south of the province in the heart of the Lujar range. Granada City is just under 100km north and the coast with its many beaches are just a short drive to the south.
Archaeological evidence suggests a human presence in the area dating back to at least to the Phoenicians. During the Al-Andalus period the town belonged to the Taha of Orgiva. After the Reconquest the municipality became part of the estate belonging to the Count of Santa Coloma. After the expulsion of the Moriscos in the 16th Century the area became almost deserted, not being repopulated until the 18th century.
The architecture is typical of the area with the town being comprised of white-washed houses along steep, narrow streets. Services are limited although the larger town of Motril is just a short distance away.
As with the neighbouring towns of Rubite, Polopos and Sorvilan, Lujar is the ideal place for those seeking peace and quiet, a relaxed pace of life, rural charm and who enjoy beautiful, unspoilt scenery.
Lujar is one of the many towns & cities in the beautiful region of Granada Spain. Discover Granada Costa Tropical with the history, local information, property sales and holiday listings at Viva-Granada.com
