There is plenty of work around, so don't be afraid of that. It depends on how much you are willing to promote yourself.

There are also a number of good sources to promote yourself via advertising, including this website, a bi-monthly magazine called "Where2" and of course, there's no substitute for word of mouth - which works well for me.

It's best to sick with your core skills initially as there is no shortage of cowboy builders around and trying to take on work you're not experienced with, certainly in a different country, will inevitably backfire on you.

My own core work is kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms - design, suppy and installation. Over time here though, I've moved into property reforms, but only because I can successfully execute full reform projects by bringing together all the right trades for the right aspects of each job. I work with both British and Spanish tradesmen who are all qualified and experienced in their own particular areas of expertise. Without their skills and experience, I could obviously not execute full reform projects successfully.

It's important to get a good knowledge of the language, other tradesmen and of course, suppliers. Of note to yourself as a carpenter, is that generally, timber products - especially hardwoods - are more expensive in southern Spain than in northern Europe. Why this is, I could'nt say, but you will find that it's important to shop around with suppliers, as it took me a while to find a really good timber merchant who I always use now.

Good luck with your move and hope you find everything you're looking for.
