Located just 8km from south of Granada City, this town sits on a fertile valley surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park.

The oldest settlement in the area dates back to the Bronze Age between 1900 - 900BC. Occupied by the Arabs until the Reconquest and during the subsequent expelling of the Moriscos the area went into decline. The town was repopulated during the 16th Century on the order of King Felipe II.

The district is made up of three town centres: Monachil Pueblo, Barrio de Monachil and the renowned Sierra Nevada ski resort.

An attractive town with a typical Spanish feel (and slightly quieter than the nearby ski resort) in a stunning location Monachil is the ideal place from which enjoy many outdoor actitivites that include, skiing (in the winter), hiking, mountain climbing, riding and mountain biking.
