This large town is situated just off the N-340 at just under 70km south of Granada City. It sits at the foot of the Lujar mountain range and is considered the capital of Granadas Costa Tropical. As with other towns along this stretch of the Spanish coastline it enjoys a mild, subtropical climate. This is due to the geographical location with Africa to the south and the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range providing protection from the cooler winds blowing in from northern Europe.
During the Arab period Motril was home to the mother of King Boabdil up until the Reconquest. After this the town gradually became the most important commercial and economic town along this part of the coast.
Present day Motril is a vibrant, modern town with a population exceeding 50,000. The economy is supported by the large commercial port aswell as locally cultivated produce and, ofcourse, its ever-growing popularity not only as a tourist destination but a popular place for those seeking permanent residence.
The many monuments to be found are testament to the towns history and they sit side by side with modern buildings housing a of wealth shops, restaurants and hotels.
