Located in the north-east of the Province just under 150km from Granada City. Orce sits on a high plateau known as the Altiplano 950m above sea-level in the area of Baza-Huescar.
The area was first settled by a group of Hominids over 1 million years ago (evidence of which can be seen in the Orce Prehistoric Museum) making this one of the most important palaeontological sites in Europe.
Over the centuries the area has been inhabited by both the Romans and the Arabs and was finally taken by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489.
The main source of income for this small, typically Spanish town is farming and cattle rearing. However, thanks to the characteristics of the surrounding countryside and the oppurtunities it provides for outdoor adventure, rural tourism is on the increase.
