The town of Pampaneira lies roughly half-way between Granada City and the Costa Tropical high in the Alpujarra hills. With its white-washed, almost 'cubist' houses the town has retained the manner of architecture typical of the villages of the surrounding area. Despite its size Pampaneira is a lively town whose position within the Sierra Nevada Natural Park attracts many tourists seeking outdoor adventure.
There are a number of bars and restaurants providing night-time entertainment and numerous tourist shops, mostly selling colourful, hand-woven rugs and textiles. The main hub of the town is centred around the Plaza de la Libertad and its here that the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz can be found. A typical Mudejar style structure built between the 17th and 18th centuries its ochre coloured walls contrasting with the white of the town that surrounds it.
Despite its popularity with tourists Pampaneira manages to retain the simple, 'away-from-it-all' charm expected from a small Spanish town. An ideal place from which to explore and enjoy the natural beauty and drama of the surrounding landscape whilst providing an interesting alternative for those looking beyond the usual beach-front locations.
There is an annual craft fair held in Pamaneira which takes place mid-September - check with Pampaneira Town Hall for details.
