Located in the south-east of the Province within the boundaries of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. With an altitude of 1,476m above sea level this is one of the highest villages in Spain.
Although no remains have been found dating before the Arab period its Latin name suggests it may have originally been a Roman settlement.
Trevelez is one of the many villages in the area known as the Alpujarra (foothills to the Sierra Nevada mountain range) that are very popular with tourists seeking outdoor adventure. The architecture is typical of the whole of this region being made up of pretty, white-washed houses built along narrow, winding streets. The opportunities for enjoying outdoor activities are numerous while the towns many bars and restaurants provide evening entertainment. There are many shops selling gifts and, it should be noted, Trevelez is famous for its locally cured hams!
